"Sweet
Dreams" Project ~ Pajamas for Shelters
New
pajamas for women and children were collected at our GFWC of
Massachusetts Fall Meeting, Saturday, October 16 at Delaney’s
in Holyoke.
The
pajamas were then distributed to Massachusetts shelters one week
later on Make A Difference Day, Sunday, October 24th.
~October is
Domestic Violence
Awareness Month~
Domestic
Violence is a pattern of coercive behavior that is used by one person
to gain power and control over another. It may include the use of
physical and sexual violence, verbal and emotional abuse, stalking and
economic abuse. Domestic violence results in physical injury,
psychological trauma, and some- times death. The consequences of
domestic violence can cross generations and truly last a lifetime.
Consider
the following:
- One in every
four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime
and 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women.
- One in four
teens reports verbal, physical, emotional, or sexual abuse each year.
- One in five
high school girls has been physically or sexually abused by a dating
partner.
- One in nine
Americans over the age of 60 has experienced some form of elder abuse.
- Each year,
women experience about 4.8 million partner related assaults and rapes.
- Men are the
victims of 2.9 million assaults.
Plan
now to participate in the new GFWC Signature Project, Domestic Violence
Awareness and
Prevention_________________________________________
GFWC volunteers will make a positive change in

The
Call to Action
EDUCATE YOURSELF:
What are the resources available in your community? A shelter? A
hotline? What are the statistics regarding domestic violence
in your community? Check with social services.
Check with your local police. Check with hospitals.
Learn more about intimate partner violence through information from
GFWC Partners. Is there a shelter for survivors of intimate
partner violence in your area?
INFORM
OTHERS: Educate your club or
community by presenting programs work- shops, speakers.
Provide press kits and encourage newspaper articles.
CREATE
CHANGE: Donate prepaid phone cards. Host
a Pajama Party raising money and collecting pajamas for women and
children in shelters. Donate professional attire to battered women
seeking employment.
COLLABORATE:
Work with your club to research, plan and implement projects members
would like to do. Encourage your club to work with like-minded groups
who are also trying to end domestic violence in your city or
town. Report to GFWC about what your club is doing so GFWC
can then inform GFWC partners and gain additional support.
